Break Bulk
Break bulk imports are comprised of motor vehicles, oversize/overmass project cargo, oversize mining tyres and machinery/equipment. Break bulk exports from Port of Townsville are predominantly refined minerals, live cattle and scrap metal. Throughput of break bulk cargo is relatively small at 6% to 7% of total trade.
The Port is strategically situated as the motor vehicle import hub for northern Australia and imports a large range of cars, trucks and wheeled machinery including Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Hyundai, Hino, and Komatsu.
Break bulk project cargo imports will be driven by infrastructure for both renewable projects such as solar, wind and hydro, as well as new mining developments in the Galilee basin.
Port of Townsville supports a thriving northern live cattle export industry. The livestock industry is predicting a contraction in cattle exports over the next couple of years while national herd numbers recover.
