Temperature

The temperature of water in Cleveland Bay is affected by ambient air temperatures, riverine inflows and wave action.

Seasonal influences and whether it is night or day contribute to changes in water temperature. Local and regional influences can mean sites vary significantly even though they are close geographically. 

Water temperature is important for the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, with some species sensitive to higher water temperatures.

Higher water temperatures that remain elevated for a sustained period can have a negative impact on marine organisms including coral and seagrass.
